Mexican Oak-Pine Woodland. Growing among boulders on rocky slope at head of fissure ca. 20 meters above the creek. Well-shaded but relatively dry locality. Slope about 25°; facing north.
Soil is probably rather deep but thoroughly mixed with rocks of all sizes. Derived by colluvial action and in situ development from Bolsa Quartzite and organic detritus.
Rare; confined to well-shaded localities, primarily on quartzite. Although the closely-related C. Eatoni is found nearby and hybridization is possible, the specimen seems typical of this taxon.
