Shady mossy ground and north facing road cut under young second growth forest of Abies amabilis, Tsuga mertensiana and small Thuja plicata, with Tiarella unifoliata, Athyrium filix-femina, Vaccinium, Lycopodium annotinum, L. clavatum, L. sitchense, L. complanatum, L. alpinum, Huperzia haleakalae.

Locally common but scattered, in mossy soil; forming loose mats; all sterile; growing intermixed with L. alpinum (Legler 2853) but no hybrids found.
